Recent crises have exposed the fragility of our democratic institutions, amid growing populistic tendencies, emergency legislation and increasing state surveillance. Entrenched inequalities have been laid bare and can no longer be ignored. Democracy is at a crossroad facing existential challenges like climate crisis but also new opportunities to build cohesive action to make governments at all levels more open and responsive to citizen participation and drive more radical socio-economic transformation. Can we reimagine democracy? What could it look like?
We invited PSA’s early career researchers to submit an image representing their vision of democracy, whether global, national or local. The pictures on this page are a selection of the inspiring results that the jury — composed of Chantal Mouffe, Michael Saward and the PDD convenors — reviewed. You can find the three winners and the jury statement here.
